B-17 raid Frankfurt, 29 January 1944

A LW unit equipped with Fw190 encountered and claimed victories. Can anyone identify the LW units engaged and their claims?

regards

Keith

Considering the critics Göring received during the bombing of Frankfurt in October, the Luftwaffe had to respond in force this time and 18 Gruppen were involved but one third of the victories were scored by the Fw 190-equiped I. & II. Gruppen of JG 26. So it's likely them but if you want a more precise answer, please provide more details.

Thanks Alfred. My interest is in a combat where 1/Lt Bill Whisner flying a P-47D of the 352nd FG USAAF claimed an Fw190 that had just shot down a B-17. The location was Malmedy.

In Frank Olynyk's USAAF Victory Claims in the ETO book the time of Whisner's claim is given as 1200 hours. I believe that would match up with II./JG 26.

For what is worth, the only Fw 190 units with losses are II./JG 26 and III./JG 2. I need to check into Caldwell and Mombeeck unit diaries if I can get more clues.

I wish they were somehow republished because the time of claim is really the data missing in most publications.

I didn't find anything in a quick read through Caldwell; unfortunately I don't (yet) have Mombeeck's 1944 volume.

Agreed 100%!

I've got 3 of his Victory Lists and I'd be willing to consider trading a kidney for the others.

Many thanks chaps. The German pilot bailed out therefore it seems that it's a pilot who survived the encounter and claimed a B-17.

Hi Keith

Seems the Luftwaffe claimed fifty-nine aircraft during the day(a few in the Southern front), many by NJG units. Trouble is that the daily mikrofilm entries for January 1944 are missing. However there is a type of mikrofilm that gives date and time only for individual units, so basically the names of the claimant, type e.t.c need to be acquired, this is mostly done by flugbücher.

Units are:-

1./SKG10 a B-17 at 1236 hrs South of Courtrai at 4000 metres(a Staffel claim)
9./JG2 B-24 at 1104 hrs 7000 metres by Josef Wurmheller

There are some excellent books you should get JG26 by Don Caldwell, JG2 by Erik Mombeek and various others by Jochen Prien.

Kind Regards
