Loss B-17G 42-31461 2nd. Lt. Charles A. Scott Crew

Hello,

looking for all Info`s regarding the Loss of B-17G 42-31461 305 BG / 365 BS on 30th. January 1944. 2nd. Lt. Charles A. Scott with Crew went down near Aerzen (Area Hameln / Lower Saxony). 8 POW / 2 KIA.
Looking especially for the Squadron Code (Registration) for 42-31461.
Due to Dave Osborne, B-17 Fortress Master Log. it was KY-L but this Code was for the 366 BS.....

Every help is welcome and "Thank`s" in advance,

streak98 (Dirk)

Hi Revi16,

Thank you for these important Information. Due to that ...the Letter Code "L" is correct, maybe a simple error ( Osborne B-17 Database) due to the BS Code KY i.s.o. XK for the 365 BS....

Thanks again for your Help !!!

It was not uncommon for planes from one squadron being "loaned" to another within the same group to make up available numbers for missions. I would not assume the database is in error without further information.

Andrews & Adams have "KY-L"
305BG/366BS

Details as follows.
03-11-43 a/c added to AAF inventory.
11-12-43 a/c arrived or was assigned overseas
28-12-43 Gained
31-1-44 FTR, German Fighters, crashed Hamelin, Germany -2Lt. Charles A. Scott - 2 Kia, 8 Pow.
Made 2861

So seems only served with the 305th BG.

For what it is worth, Bishop/Hays in their Losses of the 8th and 9th AF Vol 2 states XK:L

It seems the code is given depending on what each individual thinks the unit was that this aircraft belonged to.

Any photo evidence?

Cheers

Interestingly pages 9 & 10 of the MACR notes thea/c serial number the a/c Group marking the a/c letter "L" and even the colour "yellow". However no mention of any other letters are noted.
Raises the question as to whether the Squadron letters were actually carried on the a/c ?
As I noted earlier this a/c seems to have only been used by the 305th BG, so may well have moved between its Squadrons ?
