Mosquito Resin Light

Hello,

Can anyone explain me the difference between resin lights and navigation lights? Was the Mosquito FB Mark VI equiped with resin light(s)? Where precisely on the Mosquito FB Mark VI were resin light(s) fixed (fuselage, wings, tail)? What was the purpose of a Resin Light?

Best regards,
Dirk

Re: Mosquito Resin Light

AFAIK, "resin" is short for "recognition signal." In the contexts I have seen it, it seemed to refer to coloured signal flares, rather than an electric light fitted to the aircraft.

Hi Nick

I don't think that is correct! However, I don't know the answer to Dirk's question! Someone please help!

Cheers
Brian

Re: Mosquito Resin Light

Hi Nick and Brian,

I'm researching the fate of Mosquito NT179. According to the Accident Card it was shot down by an Allied night fighter in mistake for a Ju 88. The remarks are the following: ‘Aircraft was not showing Resin Light (s?)’ ‘IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) not switched on.’
  1. Any idea wat a resin light is in this particular context?
  2. Did RAF night fighter pilots follow certain steps to prevent shooting down Allied aircraft. What were the rules of engagment if an RAF night fighter pilot was unable to identify a suspicious aircraft by its IFF signal. Was it a free ticket to shoot it down?
  3. Were German night fighters able to trace the IFF signal?
  4. Was IFF always switched on during flight over enemy territory?
Best regards,
Dirk
