83 Sqn Lancaster loss
 
Hi,

Does anyone have details of an 83 Sqn Lancaster that was lost on 31st December 1942? One member of the crew was Flt Sgt David Smith, 1008971.

83 Squadron.
Lancaster I W4799 OL-S.
Op. Dusseldorf.

Crew.
P/O. L T. Jackson DFC RAAF +
F/S. D. Smith +
F/L. J. McMillan +
Sgt. B E. Hargrove RCAF +
F/S. K C. Taylor +
Sgt. D. Crossthwaite RCAF +
F/S. L R. Brettle +

The aircraft took off at 1755 hrs from Wyton for a special operation supporting Oboe equipped Mosquitoes. Crashed 2015 hrs between Demen and Ravenstein (Noord Brabant) 9 km NE of Oss, Holland. All rest in Uden War Cemetery. It is thought the Lancaster fell victim to a night-fighter flown by Hptm Reinhold Knacke, I./NJG1.

Bomber Command Losses Vol 3. W R. Chorley.
