1/Ltn. Shantz, Edward 358th FG 14. Okt. 1944
Hello,
I became the combat report from 2/le. Flakabt. 751, dated 15. Okt. 1944. They shoot down the P-47 flown by 1/Ltn. Shantz, after he attacked Targets in the small City of Saarburg near Trier. The plane crashed near Hentern and Shnatz bailed out. Did he became PoW? The German Report say: Pilot geflohen. That mean he escaped and I'm wonder that he ever cross the German lines and go over the River Mosel and enter Luxembourg that was at that time in US control. Thanks for help! h. |

Hans,
See https://catalog.archives.gov/id/91079787 Unfortunately MIA Lt Shantz was declared dead on 15 Oct 1945. He's commemorated at Luxembourg American Cemetery. It therefore appears his body was not retrieved after his crash and is still listed on the DPAA missing list: https://www.dpaa.mil/Portals/85/WWII...S_20211112.pdf Regards, Leendert |

Hello Leendert,
it seems to me that the US-Forces never get the German Documents! The Area of the crashside was used by the socalled V 2 Rockets and heavily defended and their was an very tide security line around the bases. h. |
