Ju88 A6+EH i.(F)/120 lost 18/10/42
 

Hi guys

A6+EH flown by Ltn Osthus was shot down/rammed by a P-39 piloted by Lt J. Shaffer of 33rd Pursuit Squadron off Iceland. Has anyone the story, please?

Somewhere I have a copy of the US combat report, will go looking for it. It has a transcript of radio transmissions between the P-39s and airbase. It has probably been 20 years or more since I have looked at the report, but my memory is that the P-39 returned to base. The report also has 10 or more photos of the crash site some of which are in the link above.

I did indeed send the material on this crash to Mr. Eggert many years ago. I never promised microfilm references as the material did not come from microfilm, but rather a copy of the original report.

This is not my field of interest, but have you seen the "records of sorties flown on the rudder of A6+EH"?

It seems there is an "Tail Art" at the top as well as at least 2 (British?) Baloons destroyed on the fin...I can not count the total sorties, but it seems they were divided by Country? We do have some sorties on the top right corner and some on the low left corner of the fin.

By chance, is there ANY other image of this A6+EH before the crash or being shot down? Was it a regular machine of Leutnant Osthus ?

Yes, there are more images of this aircraft, both after crash and before, IIRC showing an earlier version of the tally on the rudder and the a/c from different angles. I have not seen any source material that would indicate this was the regular machine of a particular crew, but that is not a particular interest of mine. Speculating, the Iceland missions were near the limits of capability and it might seem likely the crew for these missions might be a special one selected for it's skill and thus the same for these missions , as was the a/c.
