Photos RFC Aircraft

Hello,

Currently on ebay are a series of photos of RFC aircraft captioned variously as being at either Narborough or Netheravon at:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/m.html?it...rough&_sacat=0

https://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?item...ravon&_sacat=0

I have a couple of questions.

1. Can anyone provide the full serial for the Bristol Scout:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/11514915255...UAAOSweyxhv2In

2. Does anyone know which unit the FK.3 A1472 belonged to?

Regards,

Clint

The Bristol Scout is tricky

Looks like either 1094 or 7094, none of which were Scouts.
Best alternative seems to be 7054, but that digit 5 is one highly curved one...in the wrong place....

Hi Stig,

Thanks for the reponse. As for the Bristol Scout, yes I posted thst link seperately as the numbers appear to make no sense at all and rarther like yourself appear to me to end in 094. I might give the Great War Forum a shot and see if anyone has anything further.

Re: Photos RFC Aircraft

If it's "1094" that's the c/n for Bristol D serial 7028 but don't know why it would be marked on the fuselage (maybe before the serial allocated).
It went to Egypt in Sept. 1916 for the AFC.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the reply. I've has a response on the Great War Forum https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/...at-netheravon/
making the same suggestion as yourself. So possibly that is the case.

However, I 've also received aa suggestion that the aircraft may be 7034 and that there is a speck on the camera or a distortion caused by the wing. Again possibly so.

I fear that it may actually take another photo of the aircraft to settle this. Alas while the seller says that he has a couple more photos of the machine, neither show the serial.

Clint

Re: Photos RFC Aircraft

Good thinking Nick

However I find it a bit hard to comprehend.
I have never seen/heard of any Bristol aircraft being painted with its construction number.
Seller at least strongly indicates the photos were taken at Narborough and/or Netheravon (in our particular case).
Both airfields were large ones with plenty of units coming and going during the war.

There is nothing so far which support that 7028 ever went with any unit to any of these fields. As far as the preserved records go it seems it was assigned to the Middle East and in the end 67 Sq.

On the other hand if we look at 7054 it served with No 43 Sq and arrived to Netheravon on 13 Nov 1916
43 Sq was one of the units at Netheravon at the time.
So my money is still on 7054... :)

Cheers

So Stig,

I take it you're not sold on the 7034 and blurred photo theory?

Seems we cross sent our answers.
As said, I don't think this is a Bristol c/n

Looking at 7034 it has the same initial story as 7028, it was assigned to the ME. No indication what so ever it got near Netheravon, while 7054 certainly did!

Re: Photos RFC Aircraft

Hi Stig. No never actually heard of that either; though after 75 years I wouldn't rule anything out regarding markings. I came across this ---the next Scout D 7053.

A model but a very nice one with standard serial style.

Hello,

On 21.12.21 The seller of the items listed above has posted further items of which one is Armstrong Whitworth F.K.3 A1474,the sister machine of A1472 mentioned above at:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115151476...IAAOSwo25hwY~n

Would I be correct in thinking that all these Narborough based machines served with 50 RS?

Further photos posted today which are predominantly Narborough based F.K.3 & F.K.8 machines, but also include Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c and B.E8a as well as Vickers,Sopwith,Bristol and Curtiss aircraft can be found at:
