22 june 1941 Ju-87 loss
In reading the Book Barbarossa Unleashed p 220 it mentions a Ju-87 being hit and downed by a German artillery shell. The observer was with the 18PD, XLVII PK 2 PG. Note there were only 2 Ju-87s lost this day. Does anyone know of any others in WW II? I would say in battles where there is a lot of artillery in use like Stalingrad and Kursk there would have been some.
In WW I a number of aircraft most likely were downed by this cause including possibly Manfred Von Richtofen's 39th, 47th, and 51st victories and Oswald Boeloke's 31st victory. There was a Spitfire pilot who flew throung the slipstream of one of HMS Warspite's 15 inch shells during the Normandy landings it knocked the plane out of control and the pilot bairly managed to recover a low level. In Vietnam a USAF transport aircraft was downed by a stray US artillery round. |
Re: 22 june 1941 Ju-87 loss
James, good morning.
I remember reading a book (either Tigers in the Mud or Michael Wittmann and the Tiger Commanders of the 1 LAAH) that an IL-2 Sturmovik was shot down by a Tiger gunner, who had a "lucky shot". I posted a thread down here on Toch some time ago, but got no positive answer from the Russian Experts to ID this IL-2. I believe a lot of L-4 Grasshoper were shot down either by their own Artillery Fire or by enemy fire.... Do you know in which unit this Spitfire pilot you do mention flew? I am interested because a Brazilian born pilot was shot down on D-Day on a mysterious and still unknown way. I suspect he was either hit by "friendly Fire" or by the German Flak... Nice thread and subject by the way....All the best, Adriano |

I am sorry I don't remember the name of the pilot or Squadron. I think i read about this incident in a book on HMS Warspite.
