Do17 2/(F) 11 lost 11 Jul 1940

I see that BBCA Vol.1/p.29 notes "three crew missing" but no names.

I have 2 names for an aircraft of 2 Staffel (F) Fernaufklärungsgruppe 11 lost in the Portsmouth/Poole vicinity, does anybody have other crewmen ?

Fw. (FF) Erich Möckel (55556/22), born 1913 at Plauen, Vogtland, Missing
Gefr. (BF) Karl Oberschmidt, born 27 Feb 1920 at Altenbaindt Donau, Missing

thanks Peter

The missing name is Uffz Max Waehner-B. BTW, my book on the Do 17 in the BofB which is about to go to the printers will have all Do 17 aircraft and crew casualties during the Battle

Hi,

The following may also help with the context:-

RL7-2/555 has the following relating to 2.(F)/11 on this date:-

Einzelmeldung Nr 10 vom 11.7.40 (18.15 Uhr)

"1 Do 17 of the 2.(F)/11 (Start 05.55 hrs) to ascertain shipping in the Channel to and from harbours between Portsmouth and Portland. Attack on a steamer of 3 ~ 4000 t in a widely spaced convoy of 12 medium and small merchant vessels 20 km south of Swanage. Effect not observed."

Also

Einzelmeldung Nr 5 vom 12.7.40 (01.30Uhr)

"2 (F)/ 11 Do 17 (start 5.00 p.m.) To monitor shipping traffic in the Channel, south of a line between Portsmouth - Weymouth."
There follows a detailed report of observations.

Neither Einzelmeldung mentions either of these aircraft as being lost.

Additionally, Lagebericht Nt 310 (12.7.40 for 11.7.40) records, on page 8, the loss on 1 Do 17 amongst the 12 aircraft reported lost for that date at the time of the report.

Andy,

This may relate to the 11 July loss, the Luftflotte 3 Einzelmeldung report no. 5 for July 13 includes an addendum listing a Do 17P of 2(F)/11 overdue from a reconnaissance flight over the channel.
