Beaufighter Identity help

All

I am looking for help to identify a Beaufighter lost off Sitia Bay, Crete. The wreck has been discovered, but divers would like to know where the data plate on these aircraft is located?
Also if anyone has loss records that might fit that would be a great help.

TIA
Dave

Hi

Have you looked for the serial number under the tailplane.

Cheers

According to Richard A. Frank's book you have either a TFX, Mk X or Mk XIc.

Hi David,

If perhaps the fuselage is fairly intact then is it not possible to see some part of the serial number on the remains ?
Or what about the nose section, there should be a serviceing pannell in the forward section, that should say something.

No sign of any painted serial numbers. Not sure about the panel in the nose section. For Beaufighters, so I am reliably informed, engine numbers were recorded in loss reports...of course it is getting a look at the loss reports which is the problem.

In that Area we're talking perhaps 46 and 603 sqn during the war and 108/39 Sqn just after. This COULD be a postwar flight active during the Greek civil war.

Just somewhere to look I thought.

Edit: Seems you have to add 252 and 272 Sqn to that. ..

Have you seen this list of Beaufighter claims?
