Major Graubner KG 4 on May 8, 1945
Hello,
On May 8, 1945 III Corps received the following report from the 14th Armored Division: "Major GRAUEBNER, Kampsgeschmader 4 who flew in his plane with crew and women to escape from Russians at KOENIGGRAETZ (60 miles E of PRAG. He ordered all his 15 planes to fly into this territory to surrender. All equipment is O.K.; landed at VELDEN (Z3080) 1800B. All 15 planes will land S of WEIMAR." Is there anything known about this incident? I am not really sure if the location of his landing is correct. A couple of years ago I read somewhere on the internet that Major Graubner landed close to Munich, but cannot find the source anymore. Kind regards, Daniel |

Reference wZ3080 on the Nord de Guerre grid (48° 19' 57'' N, 12° 11' 36'' E) is in open fields 6 km SW of Velden and 28 km E of München-Riem, so "near Munich" isn't too wide of the mark.

Re: Major Graubner KG 4 on May 8, 1945
Thank you, but that's not what I was trying to say. Of course Velden is "near Munich", but the location "close to Munich" that I found on the internet was a town that was not near Velden. If I remember correctly the source was a relative of Major Graubner. I was hoping that because Major Graubner was Geschwaderkommodore of KG 4 it was "common knowledge" where he surrendered.
I have the same problem with a Bienenstock-crash at Velden in early May 1945. CP of the 14th AD was at Velden, so probably there was a mix-up in the reports. So far no further evidence has turned up regarding those two incidents besides the US reports. Kind regards, Daniel |
