B-17 Towering Titan 43-38085
Is there anyone out there who knows the story about this 305th BG B-17 being shot down? My understanding is it occurred on Apr 17, 1945, and seems to have gone down by an Me262. I am getting different info about it. The MACR states it was struck by an Me262 and tore the wing off. Other stories relate to Adolf Galland downing it and also George Paul Eder downing it.
The MACR 14172 states at the bottom of the cover page to see S-2 Summary of Eye-witness accounts. I don't know how to get to those summaries. Thanks Tony |

Page 3 of the MACR is the S-2 summary, (see the heading at the top of that page).

Re: B-17 Towering Titan 43-38085
Thanks Roland.
I had just learned from a neighbor friend that her father was a bomber pilot in WWII and that she had a collection of photos and documents from the war, which he never spoke about to her. I went over and viewed the collection she has, and in it is an original photograph that is shown of 43-38085 dropping bombs as in one of your links. I had never heard of it and looked it up on Joe Baugher's site, and looking at the MACR states the B-17 ws 'rammed'. Another site states that GP Eder downed it. In this collection is another photo of a parked B-17, 43-37813 most likely. The '1' is not totally clear though. JJ =*= G Here is what Joe Baugher has on it. JJ is correct for the 422nd BS 422nd Bomb Squadron, 305th Bomb Group, Chelveston (Station 105), Northamptonshire 28Jun44. Named Scooterini" Failed to return from a mission to railway marshalling yards at Mannheim, Germany 9Sep44 (9KIA). Damaged by flak with a direct hit in the nose and cockpit, the bomber went straight over in a dive. Crashed at Viernheim, Mannheim, Germany MACR 8598 I figured out that this neighbor's father (LastName Duke) was a co-pilot. Seems the pilot's name was Touby but so far I have not located the 'Touby' crew. Thanks Tony |
