Ju188 on the night of 26/27 September 1944

Hello,

I am trying to find any info (WrNr/unit) about the Ju 188 that Wight-Boycott Cathcart (25 Sqn)
shot down on the night of 26/27 September 1944 40m E Harwich.

I cannot find any Luftwaffe loss according to this incident.

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Maybe this loss (although author Theo Boiten has this loss on 27-28 September):

27-9-1944 10./NJG 3 Feindflug Nordsee / Kanal

Von Seeaufklärung nicht zurück

Ju 88 G-1 W.Nr. 712227 D5+FV

100% damage

(FF) Uffz. Richt, Alfred

(Bf) Ogfr. Neureither, Paul
(Bf) Gefr. Scheunemann, Helmut
(Bw) Ogfr. Carnein, Kurt
(all four missing in action)

Also, according to the combat report:

"By the light of the flames a Swastika was seen on the rudder and twin masts, height about 3/4 feet, were seen to be fitted transversely behind the cabin on top of the fuselage, suggesting that the aircraft could be used as the lower component of a composite aircraft. "

So Wight-Boycott had just read about Mistels or something, but I think the more logical explanation is that they are two Schräge Musik barrels. Just my interpretation.

Timon

Hello George

As this was the only loss for the Nachtjagd in the Night 26th - 27th September this should necessarily be your candidate

10./NJG 3 / Junkers Ju 88 G-1 / # 712227 / D5 + FV / Special Operation Maritime Reconnaissance - Thames Estuary / Shot down by Mosquito - Wing Commander Wight-Boycott - 25. Sqn. / Crashed in the North Sea about 80 Km east of Southend-on-Sea / Unteroffizier Alfred Richt (FF) + Gefreiter Paul Neureither + Gefreiter Helmut Scheunemann + Gefreiter Kurt Carnein - all missing

Cheers

Fred

Hello,
I want to extend my thanks to both of you for being so helpful. You provided me excellent sources of information.

The unit normally flying recce over the North Sea at night was 3.(F)/122 but the British Operations Watch report for the night only mentions radio traffic to and from IV./NJG 3 aircraft. It mentions the RAF claim but this wasn’t a case where they heard a distress call or anything like that.
