Hans 'Assi' Hahn - Goethe quote.
 

I have completed the Hahn translation of his autobiography 'I Speak the Truth'

I am in the process of proof reading the whole manuscript and have come across a quote he refers to from Goethe. It is in German, does anyone recognise exactly from which work it comes from: I have translated it into English.

"Niemals darf ein Mensch glauben, das Ende sei gekommen. Gueterverlust laesst sich ersetzen, ueber anderes troestet die Zeit; nur ein Uebel ist unheilbar: wenn der Mensch sich selbst aufgibt."

"A person must never believe that the end has come. Loss of goods can be replaced, and time heals other losses. Only one evil cannot be forgiven - when a man gives up on himself."

The only quote for "Güterverlust" in the Goethe-Wörterbuch (https://woerterbuchnetz.de) is "Beiträge zum Morgenblatt für gebildete Stände 1807 - 1816 Abteilung I Band 41 Seiten 1-115". As I am no Goethe specialist, this is the best guess I can make.

As this quote in Hahns book by Goethe obviously is incomplete - the whole would be: "Niemals darf ein Mensch, niemals ein Volk wähnen, das Ende sei gekommen." - I wonder if you could tell me where in the book (which page) I could find it...?

This is a quotation from a speech in French of Johannes von Müller on 29 January 1807 about the glory of Friedrich des Großen in the Akademie der Wissenschaften Berlin/Academy of Sciences Berlin. Goethe has translated this speech into German. This is published for example in Goethes Werke Vol. 23 pages 362-372.
