Aleksandr Pokryshkin: Know Yourself in Combat
I hope a review is forthcoming.
From the Stone & Stone site: "Author Juan Fraile-Nuez sent us a copy of his newest book: Ferrer-Martinez, Lilianna and Juan Fraile-Nuez. Aleksandr Pokryshkin: Know Yourself in Combat. N.P.: Self-Published, 2023 “Know Yourself in Combat," the autobiography of Soviet ace Air Marshal Aleksandr Pokryshkin, was originally published in Russian in Moscow in 1986. This is the English translation of that book, with additional material (including accounting and analysis of his victories) by Lilianna Ferrer-Martinez and Juan Fraile-Nuez. It's part of a planned 28 titles in their Heroes of the Soviet Union series, of which three are available so far in Spanish and two in English." Usual disclaimer, Ed |
Re: Aleksandr Pokryshkin: Know Yourself in Combat
Ed, thank you for sharing his autobiography now in English language. Seems quite interesting indeed.

Re: Aleksandr Pokryshkin: Know Yourself in Combat
Hello,
This is an interesting book and a marvellous work by Ferrer-Martínez and Fraile-Nuez to translate it and self-publishing it! 520 pages (!), a few pictures but unfortunately no index! It ends with crediting him with 103 confirmed victories according to Soviet sources and 145 victories according to the authors research work (which is far ahead of Bykov’s 43+4 or the official 59!). 54 victories are according to the authors confirmed with German records. I haven’t had the time yet to work through their analysis of the victories. Best regards/Hĺkan |
Re: Aleksandr Pokryshkin: Know Yourself in Combat
"103 confirmed victories according to Soviet sources and 145 victories according to the authors research work." This sounds incredulous to me. How is it possible to double the victories of an 'ace', with 'kills' that even the pilot himself didn't claim back then?

Re: Aleksandr Pokryshkin: Know Yourself in Combat
Hello Dénes,
Perhaps I was a bit unclear but the authors only analysis the claims made by Pokryshkin in his book, i.e. it's Pokryshkin making the claims not the authors. Best regards/Hĺkan |
