US 82nd BS Mitchells at Tingley, spring 1943

I am researching a Danish-Canadian RCAF pilot who flew in No. 232 Squadron in North Africa in the spring of 1943.

On three occasions - 1, 2 and 26 March 1943 and he was part of an escort for Mitchell bombers, cf.

As fars as I can gather these were aircraft from 82nd Bomb Squadron. Would anyone know if the mission reports or other detailed information on the missions are available somewhere?

Kind regards

Mikkel

Hi Mikkel. Not very detailed but these are the March 1943 operations by Theatre. The B-25s were from the 81st and 82nd BSs which were transferred temporarily to Twelfth AF in Algeria in February to support the RAF; the other 2 squadrons remained with Ninth AF in Libya. The 2 squadrons were at Berteaux but they had detachments at other fields.
Note the B-25C or D in the photo in Ninth AF Sand camouflage (the Spitfire is actually a Vb). 232 left Tingley on March 16, to Souk el Khemis. The 7 airfields there were named after London landmarks, 232 was at "Victoria".
You may be able to find something in the 12BG sites.

Nick
Thank you for the information. I'll follow these leads.

My pilot actually flew the Spitfire in the photo on several occasions.

Knd regards

Mikkel. I don't know whether you have seen this article from the "Guardian" newspaper ( April 1942) ?

Nick,
Thanks. I know the story. The original press release from the Danish Council from April 1942 is hanging, framed in my hobby office.

More on the story from my website
