Remembering Flt Sgt Leslie Ernest 'Spike' Watson, No.1 Squadron RAF, KIA OTD 80 years ago
Raising a toast to and Remembering my grandmother's former fiance, Flt Sgt Leslie Ernest 'Spike' Watson, of No.1 Squadron RAF, shot down by 20mm flak and KIA 80 years ago today, on 29th January 1944 in Hawker Typhoon JP498 JX-K whilst on a 'bombphoon' attack on the St Roch railway junction and SS-occupied Friant Barracks in Amiens, Northern France. His was one of 8 Typhoons on the mission Ramrod 495 - and the only one not to return. He was just 27 years old. As the wording on his grave states: 'THEIR DEEDS WERE NOT IN VAIN FOR THEY SHALL LIVE IN GLORY.' Not forgotten.
