Lt. Col. David Hamilton, C-47 pathfinder pilot, D-Day
from facebook: Fans of the C-47 Skytrain
David Kavanagh · · Sad to report that Lt Col David Hamilton has passed away aged 102. David was the pilot of Pathfinder C-47 “chalk 14’ 43-15330. One of 20 C-47s of the US 9th Air Force Troop Carrier Command to leave RAF North Witham, Lincolnshire, late on the evening of 5th June 1944. They carried the Pathfinder paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. This was the very first D-Day operation. In June 2019 David returned to former RAF North Witham (now Twyford Wood) where I had the great privilege of showing him around the remains of his old base. This was David’s first visit back in 75 years. There was a flypast by C-53 “D-Day Doll”. He was a wonderful man. And a privilege to have known. |
