Capt Joseph Lang 4th FG KIA 14 October 1944
Does anyone have information on what Luftwaffe unit he encountered on this last mission? Nothing in the unit histories I have access to either: Prien's histories for JG1, 3, 27, and 53, Mombeek's JG4 and JG5, and Caldwell's JG26 work. Review of Tony Wood's lists show no corresponding claims.

Could it be ground fire, he was low down and alone; Eighth AF War Diary says it was "battle damage" rather than shot down. Lang's radio message was 1hr. 25mins. after he was reported turning off by his wingman 1/Lt. Jahnke after the B-24s were diverted (MACR 9495)-- possibly engine trouble but odd that he didn't call it in.
