Bf110 Encounter September 15/16th 1940

Hi,

A Wellington of No.149 Squadron reported being attacked by a 'Bf110' over the Honington beacon on return from a raid on Calais on September 15/16th. The damaged was substantial and the front gunner injured. Both the No.3 Group HQ Records Books, a the Form 'E' report the incident and the extensive damage, with reference to cannon fire. I have been told that no Bf110's were over England on this date. Theo Boiten states that I./NJG2 were over England on September 16th/17th. Is there a possibility they were also over Suffolk the previous night?

TIA

Steve

Could have been a Do 17 Z-07/Z-10 or Ju 88C-2, one of the latter from 2./NJG 2 being lost on 16 Sep 40

Thank you Chris, they did not claim a fighter, but were attacked by one!
