French Bombardment over Mannheim - reasons

Hello Everyone,

During the Blitzkrieg, the French bombers units performed several bombing mission over the Mannheim area on 5th June'40 and 10th June'40. It was often reported that main targets were the airfield(s ?), railway station and node of railways.

Do you know the reason why this area was targeted during this period?
Is there an important industrial center or a strategic point due to important node of german communication (railways..) or the number of airfield set in this area?
All info welcomed.

Cheers

Jerome
