Attack on RAF Mildenhall October 13th 1941

Hi,

The RAF Mildenhall Station Records Book states that Mildenhall was attacked at 21:45hrs on October 13th by an unplotted German aircraft. Four craters were made in the landing ground and four holes in 'A' Flights Hangar. I am aware that I./NJG2 were active over England. However, the Mildenhall Records book reports the craters were 'large'. So could this still be I./NJG2?

TIA

Steve

Bundesarchiv RL 2-II/415 gives a total of 17 tonnes HE and 44 BSK incendiary clusters dropped on airfields in October 1941 but doesn't break that down any further, unfortunately.

Two intruders from I./NJG 2 were active that night reporting to have dropped bombs on what they thought was Feltwell (2240hrs), Hemswell (2125hrs) and Manby (0115hrs). Due to a number of considerations, bombs were generally 50kg types dropped by Ju 88Cs. This night they reported dropping SD50s and incendiaries. My guess is they mixed Mildenhall with Feltwell so they dropped 6 x SD50 and 72 incendiaries reporting hits on the runway and a hangar and saw 2 explosions probably aircraft

If it was Feltwell then the following is to be found in Lageberichte 765 (Issues 10.00 14.10.41) Anlage 4

At 22:40, 6 SD 50 and 72 incendiary bombs were dropped on Feltwell from an altitude of 1,200 metres; the bombs were seen to strike the runway and a hangar, and two intense fires, presumably caused by the destruction of aircraft, were observed.
