Question as to who ws flying a B-24 on 22 Sept 1944

Hello all

On the 22nd September 1944, the 451st BG flew into Lyon aerodrome, carrying supplies for the forces in France. where upon landing one of their Liberators came into collision with a 79th FG P-47 that was taking-off. The 451st Web site has a photo of the Lib minus its outer wing, but I can find no reference at all to who was flying it. Detaiis I have so far are:
727th BS/451st BG B-24J-10-FO, 42-51750 ‘8’ Gang Bang on trucking mission, while landing at Lyon, struck by a P-47D 42-27006 of 85th FS/79th FG 2/Lt Jack L Slatton inj, that was taking-off, wing outboard of No 1 engine ripped off, repaired

(it was later lost in April 45.)

Does any one know who the pilot was?

Thanks

Russell

Hi Russell!

I checked the AAIR database and if you search on the P-47 serial, 42-27006, you get an match. P-47 Pilot Jack L Statton.
Then I believe you can find out more info regarding the B-24 in that accident report. listed as GAC, so maybe no pilot in the B-24 when accident occured?

It's strange that no name on Accident-Report.com or 451st. accident registry; nor in daily report for 22nd. though incident mentioned.
There is an account by a 461BG member Leslie E. Toleen here of the collision on athe very busy airfield, still no names. Also a nice photo of Statton's P-47 (looks like "Dorothy") afterwards, apparently he injured his back but could have been much worse. X-00 suggests HQ.

Hi Johan and Nick

Thanks for the replies, I tend to be thinking there is not a 451st Group accident report because it happened away from their base and thus the assumption was the staff at Lyon Bron would do the paperwork. Thanks for the help.
