Off Topic-Royal Flying Corps in Combat
For those interested, my latest book will shortly be headed to the printers. Over the years I have been collecting photos taken by the Germans of crashed RFC aircraft and I was persuaded to write a picture book on the subject. Photo quality from that time is generally very good and serials can be seen making it easy to match the crash with a loss and who shot the aircraft down. 119 pages and being sold by P&S for £25. I will keep all apprised of when available and if P&S will do a deal for 12 OCH

Very interested.
Royal Flying Corps In Combat: Rare Archive Images of Aerial Warfare Over the Western Front in WW1 (Air World, an imprint of Pen & Sword - 28 February 2027) - UK (Air World, an imprint of Pen & Sword - 28 April 2027) - North America By Chris Goss 120 pages w/ 110 b&w photos - hardcover £25.00 - Introductory offer £20.00 $44.95 US "Knights of the Air" was the title given to daring aviators of the First World War, who flew fragile, unreliable machines in thrilling dogfights. Many pilots of the Royal Flying Corps met tragic ends, and this book by Chris Goss showcases an extraordinary collection of photos and stories of these downed aircraft from the Western Front. Each image tells the tale of the aviators behind them. For example, Second Lieutenant Gilbert Insall and Air Mechanic Thomas Donald, after their Vickers FB 5 Gunbus was damaged, made repairs under enemy fire and returned to base. They were shot down again weeks later, but Insall later escaped captivity and received the Victoria Cross. Chris Goss delves into the stories behind the crashes, even identifying enemy pilots who shot down some of the planes. The mysterious case of Second Lieutenant John Holtom’s DH 2, whose body was never recovered, remains unsolved. This book also reveals how many surviving pilots went on to have distinguished careers, including Montagu Chidson, who, after being captured in 1915, later rescued vital diamonds from Amsterdam in 1940 while serving with M.I.9. Royal Flying Corps in Combat is a captivating account of the aircraft, battles, and aviators of the First World War." The Author "After a 32-year career in the RAF and three years working for a civilian company as its Head of Operations, Chris Goss is now a full-time aviation author and military historian. He is the author of over 50 critically acclaimed books covering aspects of the World War II air war over North- West Europe. He is a historical consultant for a number of major projects, such as the recovery of the Dornier 17 by the RAF Museum and Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and for TV channels such as The History Channel and Channel 5's 'The Battle of Britain: 3 Days that Saved a Nation'." https://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/Roya...rdback/p/53290 |
