Victory over Jack S MacConkey 10601415 Pilot KIA P-51 43-7156 Slugger
Jack S MacConkey 10601415 Pilot KIA P-51 43-7156 Slugger ( 355th Fighter Group 358th Fighter Squadron) enemy aircraft crashed Frankershausen 19-04-1944 11:00
Buried 20-04-1944 Friedhof Frankenhausen. Dogfight 3. POSITION - Approximately 20 miles NE of Kassel 4. I saw P/O MAC CONKEY in a Luffbery with a FW 190. The FW 190 was getting on his tail. I called him and told him to stay in the same turn, and I went after the 190 on his tail. As I began firing there was an explosion in my left wing and I looked to see two FW 190's in string on my tail. They were firing at me, and had hit me in the left wing.(We were in a left turn at the time). As I broke tighter in left I saw the FW 190 ahead firing, and P/O MAC CONKEY'S ship burst into flames. I'M sure he had no chance to bail out. Harold J. Hoffman Captain, Air Corps. MACR 4319 KUJ-905 Any claimants? Tia |

Hi Schnautzer,
Is it Bad Frankenhausen or Frankershausen? |

Peischl was apparently west of Eisenach at 1039hrs

Re: Victory over Jack S MacConkey 10601415 Pilot KIA P-51 43-7156 Slugger
The JG 1 claim is neither at the right time not in the right place, while Schwaiger's one is close for both. It is probable that the US witness misidentified the German fighters.
Peischl's victim might have been the P-51B-10 43-7181 of 335th FS, 4th FG that was shot down by a fighter near Hoher Meissner, roughly midway between Eisenach and Kassel. Capt Charles F Anderson, an ace with 10 victories, was killed. The MACR is listing him as lost in Brussels area but it seems it is only based on a witness who thought he saw and heard him in this location. |

Source for Brussels is in the MACR page 4: "Between Brussels and the coast a voice on the R/T said, "Hey Andy, there are two smoke trails at 12:00 o'clock, high." The person who I presumed to be Lt. Anderson, replied, "They look like friends but watch them". I orbited to try to find and join them. I did not see them nor did I see any other smoke trails in the sky. This took place at approximately 1120 or 1125 hours." Anderson was KIA at that time. |
