Ju88 crashed on Portland 11/08/40 ....

Can anyone help with details of the above incident? My grandfather was posted from the army to guard the plane after it had crashed awaiting the specialists to come and investigate. I am trying to compile some details for him about this and any help would be appreciated, all I have so far is the aircraft was ?/B3+DC from unit KG54.

There is a photo of this aircraft in Vol. 1 of 'The Blitz Then and Now' with a caption that is was believed that Oblt. Welte was wounded when an LDV post fired on the crew as they were leaving the aircraft. This is also stated in the KG 54 history, another report says that Welte lost a leg as a result of the shooting has this been ever comfirmed,

Kagerbauer said in his letter to me that it was the Hurricane's second attack which cost Welte his leg. I have two photos of the crash-landed aircraft plus a number of the crew

Hi Chris,
trying to tie up some loose ends, so to speak!

The Kagerbauer you refer to in this old thread.. is this Gottfried?

If so he was also involved in an incident prior to Battle of Britain ( 28.6.40 ) when the Junkers 88 he was flying in, forced landed at Quackenbruck suffering 50% damage.

source Siegfried Radtke's KG54 Eine Chronik Documenten Und Berichten 1933-1945. Pg280.

Best regs,
Steve.

-> Chris

I have Ofw Karl Meier as BO on this one. Are you sure about the name (Mehre) that you quote?

Kind regards,
Rudi.

Stab II./KG54 Junkers Ju88A-1. Shot down by AA fire and attacked by F/L J.M. Strickland of No.213 Squadron during sortie to bomb Portland Harbour installations. Possibly also that previously attacked by S/L H.D. McGregor and Sub-Lt D.M. Jeram. Belly-landed at Blacknore Fort, Portland Head, 10.40 a.m. FF Oberlt Karl Welte captured badly wounded in leg, BO Oberfw Karl Meier, BF Gefr Walter Gehre, and BS Flgr Gottfried Kagerbauer all captured unhurt. Aircraft B3+DC 100% write-off.

I must introduce a note of caution regarding the June 28 reference which I currently have documented as follows:

1./KG54 Junkers Ju88A-1. Crashed near Grafeld due to engine trouble during training flight. FF Uffz Karl Kubis slightly injured, HB Uffz Fritz Karsch and BF Gefr Fritz Podak both badly injured – admitted to hospital in Quakenbrück, rest of crew unhurt. Aircraft 50% damaged but repairable.

This loss was a 1 Staffel aircraft/crew and Kagerbauer was 5 Staffel. Such temporary attachments were by no means unusual but, to the best of knowledge, were generally effected within the individual Gruppen.

Hi Peter,
many thanks for the additional information, or rather caution!

Steve.

It is Gottfried Kagerbauer. He said his BF was Gefr Walter Gehre and it was not him on 28 Jun 40-he was in Celle 3 Jun 40-14 Jul 40
