nightfighter pilot Schmid / Schmidt / Schmitt (UK-version)

Hello friends,

I did a copy paste action without realising that it was written in German. Now the same request in English: I am searching for more info about an unknown pilot. This is what we know now:

First name: Hans (could have been Johannes)
Last name: Schmid / Schmidt / Schmitt
Rank: probably an officer
Unit : I.NJG 1 between approx. Nov. 1941 - Sept. 1942
Born in: Troisdorf / Siegburg in Germany

Any info about his Luftwaffe career or what became of him would be much appreciated! Best wishes from Venlo, a Holy Christmas and Happy New Year!

Hello Marcel,

I think you mean Leutnant Hans Schmitz of the 3./NJG 1.
All the best,

Wim

Hello Wim,

I might be wrong but the first name of this Lt. Schmitz of the 3./NJG 1 was Ludolf and he died in March 1942. I had the same thought as you but then this Schmitz (alias Schmidt) could not have been still alive in September 1942.

So there must have been a pilot called Schmid, Schmidt or Schmitt who was with the I.NJG 1 but left no traces (for instance Abschüsse or Namentliche Verlustmeldung) before he left Venlo. I do hope that if we could fill in the details of Ofw. Herbert Schmitt (who went to England with a Ju88 in May 1943), or Hans-Joachim Schmidt (6/NJG 3, 1/NJG 5) or Hans Schmitz (4/NJG 1) or other, still unknown pilots, we might solve the problem.

The request comes from his biological son who never has known his father so I will do my very best to help him.

All the best, Marcel

You can probably rule out Herberet Schmid not Schmitt!!!!!!!!!! He belonged to 2/NJG 2. Later 10/NJG 3.
