Sqn Ldr C.D.S. Smith DFC
Hi guys
A little while ago I made enquiries about the above officer who served with the Martlesham SDF in early 1940. One account suggests that on 5 February 1940, he was vectored by GCI Bawdsey on to He111 while flying a Blenheim. In the ensuing combat the Heinkel was claimed probably destroyed. This was claimed as the first successful radar-controlled interception. Subsequent research suggests this date is incorrect and that the incident occurred on 12 May 1940. This may be the case, but then what was the reason for the award of his DFC on 7 May 1940? Has anyone a copy of the citation? Cheers Brian To one and all - thanks for your tremendous help over the past twelve months or so, and thanks Ruy for allowing me the opportunity to increasie my knowledge on so many matters. I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year. :) |
