Gents,

The camouflage pattern and markings of this aircraft are diagnostic of the 500000-Werknummerseries. The photo appears to reflect the circumstances regarding the following aircraft:

Black 9, WNr.500090, 10./III.JG 26. This aircraft, piloted by Fw. Karl-Heinz Friedrich, was shot down at 1330hrs on 7 March 1945 by a P-51 Mustang of an unknown unit and pilot. Friedrich was wounded in the crash-landing southwest of Oberhausen. (Source: Caldwell, D.C., 1998: The JG 26 War Diary – Volume 2: 1943-1945. Grub Street, London, 576p.)

I would add that although a III. Gruppe marking (vertical bar) is absent, this is likely due to the fact that the aircraft has an unpainted natural metal rear fuselage insert that was probably a replacement for the original that wore this marking.

Cheers,

David

I'll await the release of volume II of JaPo's D-9 book before I add my two-cents worth. :p

Thank you for your replies,
my first thought was this plane being Werknummer 500645, but the shape of its tail convinced me this is an ordinary Dora.

We see if the second vol. of JaPo's Dora series will shed any light on this subject.

Best regards

Michael
