Bf 109/Ju88 loss MTO
Hi Guys.
On 20/2/44 a prolonged air battle resulted in W/O Hammond claiming 1 109 and 1 Ju 88 as a gunner in Baltimore 'R' FA468.He was from 15 SAAF and I believe the 109 from JG VII/27 from Calato. Did any 109 and Ju 88 unit put in a loss for this date. 15 sqn was on a recce in the Rhodes,Leros are. I would like to tie up the units and pilots. Thanks Stefaan Bouwer |
Re: Bf 109/Ju88 loss MTO
Stefaan, the only loss with a Med. connection listed is
Bf 109G-6, 410526, Treu, Uffz. Walter, 1./JG 4, weiße 6 +, BX+ID* 2/20/1944, MIA, cause unknown., Mombeek, Sturmjäger, I, p.103 Albanian Sea |
Re: Bf 109/Ju88 loss MTO
Hi John.
Thanks for looking up the gen. The crew believe the 109's came from Calato. 15 sqn came from Gambut area to Rhodes and the surrounding area. Unless JG 4 was based in the area it seems unlikely that this was the one if they say Albanian sea Do you know where the JG 4 109's were based?? Stefaan |
Re: Bf 109/Ju88 loss MTO
According to Holm's site, confirmed by Mombeek, they were based as follows:
1./JG4 was based at Vignanello, 10.2.44 - late 2.44; 3./JG4 was based at Centocelle, 10.2.44 - late 2.44 BTW, I have no Ju 88 losses for that date. |
Re: Bf 109/Ju88 loss MTO
Hi.
II./J.G.27, a unit located at Kalamaki, near Athens in Greece, had three aircraft damaged on this day: 1: A category 4: Destroyed by gunfire from enemy aircraft on operational flight, observed by enemy 2: A category 7: Damaged by gunfire from enemy aircraft on operational flight, not observed by enemy 3: A category 23: Damaged without enemy action on non-operational flight The cat 4 and 7 would be possible matches for 'your' Bf 109's, haven't checked other sources for them yet, and as I am at work I do not have them handy. Regards, Andreas |

Hi guys.
John, this certainly is a probability. Andreas, also what is your scourse. This cat 4 may be more likely as JG 27 have clashed with 15 sqn on numerous accasions before.Would like to know more about location and approx time. Thanks Stefaan |
Re: Bf 109/Ju88 loss MTO
Hi Andreas,
during 02.44 the II/JG27 was located in Wiesbaden-Erbenheim. Your unit could be III/JG27 which was based in Malemes and suffered one non-operational loss on the 20.02.44 and claimed one Baltimore in the morning combat (around 09.00) SE of Rhodos. The IV/JG27 was on this time in Nisch and suffered no losses on the 20.02.44. Source: Prien Bf109 im Einsatz bei der III und IV/JG27. Regards Robert |
Re: Bf 109/Ju88 loss MTO
Hi Robert.
That's it. The Baltimore lost was 'K' FA554 with Lt de Bryun Otto as pilot, and crew. The pilot that put in the claim was Uffz Gunther Striebel of 7/27. Do you know who the Pilot of the 109 was,and Id of the 109? Thanks Stefaan |
