Wood's list states that they were Mitchell's and it was on 25.09.44 but I read another source stating that they were Mauraders.

Mitchell means RAF and 98 Sqn lost FW194 and FW211 that date in the province of Gelderland where Arnhem is located.

Re: B-26 unit operating in Arnhem area 25.09.44
Henk are they B-26's or 25's in 98 Sqn? Also did the RAF lose any other Mitchell's in the surrounding areas that day? Tony Woods list has 4 going down from 1801-1805. Three loses give 52/23/3 and 52/23/8 as locations but 1 as Arnheim.

Re: B-26 unit operating in Arnhem area 25.09.44
B26 is a Marauder; B25 is a Mitchell. The Mitchell-file only has two losses on this date, the two mentioned in my previous message, which were part of the 2nd TAF.

Henk, Thanks for the reply. It looks like a overclaim against the 98 sqn and a later mistake about the type.

Re: B-26 unit operating in Arnhem area 25.09.44
'Top Secret Bird' by Maj. Wolfgang Späte (in its German original as 'Der Streng Geheime Vogel') resolves the issue. At the time that Späte saw the two Mitchells, he'd never seen them before and refers to them as 'Marauder-type twin-engined bombers' in a comparison with the B-26 which he knew. Unfortunately the translation into English is fluffed, and is rendered as 'Marauder', not 'Marauder-type', causing a confusion in the reader that the author neither experienced not intended.
