Stereoscopic photography equipment?
 

Hi everybody,
does anybody kown what cameras were used by the Luftwaffe in 1944 to accomplish stereoscopic photography pictures?

To my knowledge:
In general all possible and available cameras, as long as it was a pair of equaly lensed cameras. I.e. a pair of Rb 50/30 (Me 262 1A /U3), Rb 12,5/ 7x9 (Fw 190 A) etc.

As I know they even have this in the begining of the war. This is actually two cammera but sinchronized as I know.

It is the camera intervalometer setting which governs whether or not you will have stereo cover of a stretch of ground. The basic set-up of split verts, with a single area collector with a shorter focal length should all give you decent stereo cover. With the split verts the preferred setting is usually 10% sidelap (ie overlap between port and starboard), and 70% endlap ir overlap between frames of the same camera (the exact figure may vary). Having said that, Ive gone through Luftwaffe sorties which have 90% or more endlap. My conclusion is that Luftwaffe aircrews often didnt like the idea of bringing back unused film so had their intervalometers turning on maximum settings much of the time.

On another note stereo photography was being taken in the first world war and stereo pairs were being routinely distributed by the Brits c late 1916

Hmmm, it looks like Chris beat me to the punch. Anyway, here goes:

As noted in the AMWIS of 24 Jun 44, page 18, "A standard overlap of 60 per cent is used and a constant speed of exposure."

I think that this method of photography provides the stereoscopic quality to the photos using a single camera. I mention this because the recce a/c with which I am most familiar, the Me 410, carried two cameras, but each of a different focal length.

An additional question arose: Was there other equipment necessary to produce red-blue three dimensional pictures?

Dear Norbert -no, red blue 3-d imagery (anaglyphs) can be produced from the printing process alone. All you need are original b/w images. I am not sure whether you have access in California to CIOS or BIOS reports, but one at least of these devoted itself to the examination of printed Luftwaffe air photography and examined anaglyph production. Again, (sorry to sound a know-all) I've looked at Lw anaglyphs and theres is no doubt that the images involved were just screened in different colours.
