Mosquito hit by return fire?
Hello
Still after details on the HE177 downed on 18th April 1944 crashing at Saffron Walden. A Mosquiton from 410 Squadron flown by Flying Officer S.B Huppert and Pilot Officer J. S Christie claimed the kill and i have unconfirmed reports that as they broke off after the attack a burst of fire from the rear gunner..20mm? hit the Mosquito. Can anyone confirm this and did the Mosquito make it back to its base. Do any pictures of the Mosquito crew exist? |
Re: Mosquito hit by return fire?
From combat report ' observed strikes on port wing and motor, with pieces flying off and hitting Mosquito' ----- ' return fire from rear turret experienced which hit our starboard wing and aileron ' . After shooting down the He 177 the Mosquito was then ordered to 'U' for uncle , and picked up a contact but abandoned chase as it was approaching I.A.Z. and was subject to HAA. Report finishes Mosquito returned to base(Castle Camps )due to damage,
