Thunderbolts versus 109s 6-14-44

Recently I saw a litho depicting a combat between P-47s of the 9th AF's 368th FG and Bf-109s on June 14 '44, apparently near Lisieux in northern France. A flight of Jugs was attacked by an estimated 30 Messerschmitts, one of which flew alongside a damaged T-Bolt. The chivalrous Luftwaffe pilot broke off rather than shoot down Lt. George Sutcliffe. Does anyone have an idea of the 109 unit or perhaps even some of the pilots involved?

Thanks to all.

Pilots of III./JG 27 made several claims for P-47s in that area. These included Becker, Bartels, Schreiner, and Rehak.

I recommend you go to Tony Wood's site at

John, many thanks. I knew of Tony W's site quite awhile ago but for some reason could not always access it on my previous computer.

You're right: some heavy hitters in the action.
