What kind of Heinkel 111 was Werkenr 3178?

Hi
A modelling friend is looking for the subtype of the Heinkel 111 with Werkenummer 3178.
The Heinkel was from 9./KG26 and was shot down on April 27 1940 in Norway.

Judging by the other losses around that WNr. its an H-3.

Cheers Jim. I'll pass it on and see if it's close enough! ;)

To be honest my only source is this:

So what you're saying is that this could be the wrong Werkenummer. Hmm..

Wn is certainly the right, just the radio-code could be wrong if the right unit is the 7.KG26

Hi,

I´m the one that Kyrre is asking about this machine for. The w/n is almost certainly 3178, reg. 1H+CT (can still read on the wreckage) and the unit was 9. Kg.26, not 7. Staffel. I have access to several written sources that confirm this, although they´re unfortunately only in Norwegian...

Hi,

Definitely an H-3 if it is this WNr. I wouldn't worry too much about the unit codes as it may have been re-assigned prior to the crash, without time to alter the codes.

If you have access to the wreckage it may be useful to us if you can find the actual radio codes which are usually on a small plate riveted to the frame below the decking, forward of the top (dorsal) gun position. These are shown as two capital letters, a + or -, and two more capital letters.

Regards

David

Re: What kind of Heinkel 111 was Werkenr 3178?

Thanks David.

Unnfortunately, the plackard you are mentioning is unavailable to me for several reasons:
Firstly, the remains of this machine is now probably covered by some 6 feet of snow.
Secondly, the distance between my humble residence in Oslo and the Heinkel remains is some 360 kilometres.
Thirdly, when I last visited the site, in the summer of 2005, there were very few pieces left, since the wreck has been constantly plundered by souvernir hunters for decades. (One of the engines is still there, though, residing in a small pond and in a very poor state. Probably too heavy for even the strongest souvernir hunters!) So I might perhaps have been exaggerating when I wrote that the codes still can be read on the remains.
However, I´m quite certain about the unit codes. I know that there are 1940-vintage photos of the wrecked machine in existence that show them clearly, and I´m now searching for these photos through Norwegian contacts. I also remember the codes from the first time I saw the remains of the machine, some 40 years ago. By then, in the mid-sixties, there were still rather large pieces of fuselage and wing skinning lying around, and this avid model-building teenager made a note of it.
Anyway, I trust that this was a H-3 model from the information that has surfaced here. But: I don´t have any good references regarding the He.111 subtypes - can anybody tell me if there were any significant external differences between the H-3 and the H-6, which is readily available in kit form?

Cheers,

Anders

Thanks, everybody. I´ve got the information I needed from modelling friends at the IPMS/Norway forum. Here we go, Mr. Hasegawa and I!
