I believe it was "Ia" and it was the position of Operations Officer

I thought that the Operation Officer was the "Major beim Stab". What was his job then?

But I still cannot figure out whether it's an "I" (letter) or an "I" (roman digit).

Operation officer is the position, and "Major beim Stab" is an addition to a rank, saying this major is assigned to the "Stab" of a unit. Ia (roman digit! and spoken as "Eins A"; there were also Ib and Ic [intelligence] etc.) and the rank addition are not nessecarely meant to be the same person.
