me 410 March 6, 1944

Can anyone tell me how many me 410s were shot down on March 6, 1944 and their location? Still trying to link Lt. Cecil E. Manning's claims on that day.

Don't know what happened to my previous post on this.

Your father claimed 1-1-0 Do 217's near Brandenburg. Later reduced to 0-1-1 by 8th AF VCB and USAF confirms no destroyed credit awarded on 6 March.

Only the 357th and 4th FG engaged twins - all generally in the Berlin area. Quite a few 110's, 210's and one or two 410's claimed. Easy for pilots to mistake a 210 for a 410 so that coincides with John's report of 6 Me 410's when only a couple were claimed.

Regards,

Bill

Mistake a shoulder-wing a/c such as a Do 217 for a low-wing a/c like an Me 110? That's a bit of a stretch.

Yes, since the Me 210 and Me 410 were virtually identical, it was easy to confuse them. And, there were still Me 210Cs operational in 1944.

Great info on the Zerstoerer losses against the 1st big attack on Berlin by the USAAF! Thank you. For someone wanting more info on this attack, there is "Target Berlin. Mission 250: 6 March 1944" by Jeffrey Ethell & Alfred Price.

Bill and Erich
I am sad to say but my German geography is somewhat lacking. Is Brandenburg near any of the locations listed by Erich. In "Target Berlin", my Dad is quoted on page 74 saying he saw two parachutes from the first twin. I remember him telling me that he felt he hit the rear gunner of the second because he stopped return fire back at Dad. I guess it could be a number of reasons. Out of ammo, wounded or even death. With the presence of a rear gunner, one would think a 410 is out of the question. Didn't the 410 have remote rear guns? Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks for all the information so far.

could have been a 110, but not a 410 - not to mention the tail!
