Luftwaffe DR2 Knemeyer and its use
 

Hello,
I have sat and looked at my Luftwaffe DR 2 Knemeyer dead reckoning computer and am still confused!
Can anyone tell me how to use the thing....please

It is similar to the Dalton Computer used by the RAF. I used to have a booklet given to me during my flying training explaining how to use it but to describe and detail it here would be too hard!

These are circular slide rules. Multipication and division are accomplised by graphically adding or subtracting the values on two logarithmic scales. TSD, altitude corrections, etc.problems can be solved. If you know the basic equations for a particular problem , find the scales labeled with the variables. Constants are predetermined by offsets between the scales. The cursor is used to align values in non adjacent scales. If this abbreviated explanation is not sufficient, come back and I will try to give a specific example.

BTW Here is the other side of my DR3 since I do not own a DR2 if you can explain the difference that would be super as well.

I can see very little difference between the DR2 and DR3. My DR2 is made by Dennert & Pape, Hamburg Altona June 42 Geraet Nr 127 107 B-1, FL Nr 23825 if this helps

Hi Gruppe,

Some remarks regarding the Knemeyer and its use.

1. The Bedienungsanleitung (user manual) is frequently offered on Ebay by seller 'Luftraid'. These are copies of the original German version;
2. At the International Meeting of Collectors of Historical Calculating Instruments this year (September in the Netherlands) the focus will be on the use of calculation instruments (slide-rules) in Aviation;
3. During this meeting the Knemeyer and its contemporaries will be discussed. Especiallly the use of the Knemeyer will be explained;
4. At the moment the development of the Dreieckrechner from 1935 (Dr2) until 1945 (Dr4) is studied by putting together the different pieces collected by several people and analyse the differences within and between the different marks. This will hopefully help to understand the differences and development of the Knemeyer over the years;
5. I am researching the life of Siegfried Knemeyer (amongst others the developer/inventor of the Knemeyer). I hope to collect enough information to write a book on this very intriguing person in German (and American) aviation. I would very much like to hear from anyone who has information on Knemeyer that he is willing to share.

Attached is a photo of a Dr3 Tp. This is the Dreieckrechner that belonged to Walter Horten (Horten aircraft designer).
