Mystery Spitfire
Can anyone identify this Spitfire shown crash landed in an E-Bay Auction?

Hi!
It looks like a PR "G" model, which has 133 gallons tank on the place of the machine guns which were deleted - on the bord of attack. ( Source: Spitfire by John Vader ); or it seems a PR IV which became operational in the beginning of 1942. If we had the date the photo was taken it would be very probable to trace down the serial and almost certainly the Luftwaffe ( IF it was shot down ) pilot who shot it down. Apparently it does not have any GUN damages, so probably engine problems? Very nice photo indeed and hope you got it on e-bail, it is worth! Cheers! A. PS2: The guy who saw the LY has good eyes! We can indeed discern the LY codes which belonged to 1 PRU Squadron based at Benson. BINGO! Good eyes, young hawk!

17 Aug 40, K9791, FS J D T Taylor-Gill POW. As Franek says, there is a page of photos of this aircraft at the end of Wojtek's book including this one. Shouldn't this be in the Allied as opposed to Luftwaffe Section!!??

The engine had stopped as one blade is not bent back. If the engine was running, all 3 blades would have been bent.

i asked the seller of the photo, paul1895, for details: he read that the last digits of the serial might be ...91. the time of that emergency-landing is august 1940 and happend at montbray, france. i suggest that the plane is k9791. regards yumimoto |
