Wolfgang Falck +

Hello Friends,

this is to let you know that Wolfgang Falck peacefully passed away yesterday afternoon at 96 years of age. Those who knew him personally will agree he was the incarnation of an officer and gentleman. They don't make men like him anymore.

The World is a much poorer place without him. I consider myself priveleged to have spent many happy vacations with him and Gisela in their beautiful Tyroleon home with my own family. I cherish the many hours we had together talking about his experiences.

There are few words to describe his decency, his warmth and generosity, and all of those who were lucky enough to have met him will know what i am talking about.

Kurt, please pass on my sympathy to Gisela, and in the meantime i will write to her. I am sure his loss will be keenly felt throughout the avaition world. I am relieved that such a great man did not suffer at the end and slipped away quietly in his sleep. We have all lost a great friend and mentor!

I am also saddened by the loss of Wolfgang Falck. Peter Cornwell and I met him at his home during our research for our 'Zerstörer' book in the 1980s. We had met Jabs earlier in the week and Jabs and Falck had met up at a Nachtjager reunion a couple of days later. Falck answered the door and the first thing he said was "So you are the two mad Englishmen Jabs told me about!" in perfect English. A priceless greeting from a true gentleman. He was also generous enough to write an introduction for our book, for which we were truly grateful.

I'm very sad to hear this message. I wanted to meet him this year, but I am too late.

I had the great honour to meet Wolfgang and Gisela in 2002 when I visited them in their lovely home on the Austrian Alps. Falck will always be remembered, not so much for his contributions to nightfighting, but more so for his insistence on chivalry and fair play. Truly the aviation world has lost one of its greats!
