Luftwaffe Loss over England August 1940?

Hi,
Could anyone provide details over the loss of a Leutnant Toni Wittmann, who was lost in action on 31st August, 1940? Was he involved in a mission against England? With what unit and which aircraft? I would be very interested to find out.
Many thanks
Rick

Re: Luftwaffe Loss over England August 1940?

Good evening Sir!
In Ulf Balkes book about KG 2, it says the following:

Unknown mission - crashed in the night between 29. and 30. of august at 03.15 by Brügge in Belgium due to nightfighter shooting.
A/C Do 17 Z, Wnr. 2868 and the code U5 + FT

FF Ln. Anton Wittmann +
BO Gefr. Karl Kübler +
BF Gefr. Fritz Oehme +
BM Uffz. Josef Hentz wounded

Aircraft a 100% write off

This loss is also mentioned in "The Battle of Britain, Then and Now"

Hope this helps

Christian

Lt Wittmann Do-17Z Wnr. 2868. Bruges or Cambrai?

A late reaction on this post of 2007, but I saw my home-town Brugge (Bruges) mentioned.

On the Volksbund website it says that the location of where the three crew members who were killed was in the Cambrai, N. France, region. They're also buried in France.

Who has since 2007 found more info about this loss?

Thanks.

Regards,

Leendert
