Ju 88 Werk Nr.?
Does WN 2233 relate to the Ju 88 A-4 series?
Thank you, Steve |
Re: Ju 88 Werk Nr.?
W.Nr. 2233 was built around Oct 40 as an A-5 and was reported 100% damaged after crashing and burnin near Märk-Frie on 13 May 41 (4 KIA). As is often the case with LW identifications, it is not that simple. A report was also made for W.Nr. 2233 Ju 88 A-4 as being 100% damaged on 1 June 43. IMHO, it is remotely possible enough of the first crash survived to be rebuilt with the original W.Nr., but more likely that this is a typographical error for W.Nr. 142233. This particular error was very common during the frst year six digit W.Nr. were utilized (Ju 88s apparently being the first to have them assigned, thus the unfamiliarity using them on reports, Fb, etc.

Thank you Artie. I hope to show a picture of a plate believed from 2233 in the future.

Re: Ju 88 Werk Nr.?
Artie,
Here's a scan of the plate. It apparently returned with a U.S. soldier. I tend to think that it's associated with the crash on 1 June 1943; as you noted, items from W.Nr. 2233 may have been reutilized after the earlier crash in May 1941. Perhaps the wreck site was encountered during the Allied push through France? Thanks again for the earlier information. Best regards, Steve |
