Looking for a pic of the nose art that goes with this news story,

Re: B-17 nose art
Did you look on the "Miss America" web site? I do not know the address but Google should find it. Perhaps there is a photo. "Project Bits 'N Pieces" has a list by a/c name, but you need the name to find it.

Re: B-17 nose art
A Possibility:
# 42 - 29868 YB K " The Venus " 351st BG 508th Sq. Ditched North Sea 10/9/43 Pilot - Lt. Joseph Turley MACR # 877 |
Re: B-17 nose art
IMHO, I am guessing the B-17 in question is probably not "The Venus" from the 351st BG for the following reasons. The Miss America web site states "In her honor, her picture graced a B-17 Flying Fortress in WW II, which made 68 sorties over war-torn Germany and never lost a man."
Story can be read here: http://www.missamerica.org/our-miss-.../1940/1944.asp Pictures of "The Venus" from the 351st do not have an image of a woman, only text reading "The Venus". See pictures here: http://freespace.virgin.net/ken.harbour/f039.HTML The B-17F #42-29868 "The Venus" lost seven of it's 10 men when it was shot down. Re: B-17 nose art
Found a B-24 from the 454th BG with the name "Miss America 1944" with the portrait of a woman. The serial number is 42-52312.
Pictures of the nose art can be seen here: http://www.b24bestweb.com/Pics-M-MIS...44-MISS_AZ.htm And here, about 3/4 down the page: http://www.web-birds.com/15th/454/454th.html Could the Miss America site be incorrect and the bomber her picture was on is actually a B-24? Can not find a B-17 that matches the description. |
Re: B-17 nose art
Thanks Zemper.
The B-24 was always the bridesmaid so is understandable the B-17 would be named as the a/c. ;) |
