World War II Luftwaffe visor cap

I have a 1930's Luftwaffe visor cap. It's a summer, white, removable cap with yellow piping that I am trying to restore. This cap has a small hole in the front between the eagle and the wreath. In that hole is a split pin prong that is used to attach the removable top to the cap. The prong looks like the remains of a visor cap button that is used to attach the chin strap. I have not been able to find any examples of visor caps with that type of attachment. Does anyone know if this type of attachment was ever used or is this just a damaged visor cap. All other examples I have seen had the attachment inside and unseen the removable top.
