Erprobung Staffel 210

Whilst looking through some POW reports at TNA I came across a report which mentioned that three Me210's from Erpobung Staffel 210 had taken part in operations in response to the Dieppe raid and that one was damaged in the engine and 'crashlanded' on return.

This is the first I've heard of the twin-engined fighter being involved at Dieppe and wonder if anybody has anymore information? On the aircraft involved and the commander of the staffel.

Thanks,

Steve Pegge

If they were involved, this unit was subordinate to KG 6 and was commanded by Hptm Walter Maurer (who was later shot down and taken POW)

Re: Erprobung Staffel 210

Thanks for that Chris. Like I say the POW report is the first mention I've found of the staffel's involvement. I know the staffel lost one aircraft during operations off the UK east coast on the 13th August so it is possible they were used, but in the absense of further information I'll have to leave it as unknown.

I don't suppose you know where the Staffel was based?

and then scroll down to 17/8/1942

I think that's the unit.

Steve

I think I have a report on other ops at home. I think they were operating out of Soesterburg but cannot be certain

Re: Erprobung Staffel 210

Thanks for that Chris,

Are you sure about the staffel being control by KG6, my understanding was that that Geshwader wasn't offically formed until the start of September 1942.

The two Me210A's lost at the start of September were noted in the POW report as being part of 'Erprobungstaffel 210', the fact that they had become 16./KG6 on 1st September had obviously not yet been detected by RAF Intelligence Officers.

Re: Erprobung Staffel 210

Some records say Erprobungsstaffel 210 was 16/KG 6 and KG 6 was in existence by then. Maurer was St Kap and they were based at Soesterberg. I have losses 10 Aug, 13 Aug, 5 Sep and 2 on 6 Sep

Re: Erprobung Staffel 210

Thinking about it-Obstlt Walter Storp, formerly of SKG 210, was an apparent advocate of the Me 210 and in Sep 42 became Kommodore of KG 6; possibly an attachment of convenience?

Re: Erprobung Staffel 210

Chris,

Thanks for that. I guess the Staffel's involvement in the response to the Dieppe raid is not impossible, especially as the other Holland based units were being despatched at short notice, but I in the absense of more information I'll have to pencil it in as just a possible.

Regards

Steve

Thank you for pointing us to the note about the Me 210s on 17 August 1942, Pawel.
