Wing Co Lance Wade 'Yank in the RAF'

Can anyone confirm the Type and serial number of the aircraft that Wg Co Lance Wade was flying when he was killed on 12 Jan 1944 in Italy.
Most sources say he was flying an Auster but I have conflicting evidence that it was a Spitfire V.

According to Christopher Shores he spun out in an Auster at Foggia.
