Walrus losses 1939 -40
 

Hi Chaps,
can anyone shed any light on the 2 losses below noted in Ray Sturtivants excellent book on FAA Aircraft ?

Walrus
L.2261 - 711 Sq on HMS Sussex FTR from recce patrol in S.Atlantic, shot down by Me.109's (sic) 31.10.39.
P.O S M Bird, Lt C H E Ormiston & L/A W H Brown al MIA.

Obviously no 109's would have been within 5,000 miles of this but that is what it says in the book!

Also on 24.4.40 Walrus L.2316 ( 700 Sq Hatston) went missing on a A/S patrol in Fair Isle Channel when e/a were
in the vicinity- P.O C L Smeathers, Mid P L Furber & N/A1 C E Adams all MIA
Were there any claims by any Luftwaffe aircraft that day ?

Hi,
Can only add from FAA A/c 1939 to 1945 that -
Ormiston is spelt as Osmaston.
3 Bf109's quoted. Wonder what they were ?
And for L2316 says "All killed".
Details otherwise are the same for both a/c that you mention.

wow me 109s out that far,as for fair isle,claims, maybe ju88s,or dornier seaplanes,,do15,
>as to the walrus, why didnt fighter command use them during bob", to pick up pilots that were lost at sea",i only heard lifeboats, were used, why not walrus,as i was talkin to my dad,he said some americans did have seaplanes,why were they not used too,as the RN, did have martletts...USA, MADE,

I have a note that suggests L2316 was possibly shot down by a Do18 on 24 April 1940 - I wonder if 'Seaplanes' or someone else has any information from the German side?
