P-40B 41-13297 crashed 24th Jan 1942

A P-40B 41-13297 crashed 24th Jan 1942 in Hawaii killing the pillot. This aircraft was recovered and is now flying with the Fighter Collection

However, can anyone put a name to the pilot killed on the aircraft on 24th Jan 1942. The airplane came down on the Koolau Range, Oahu in Hawaii

A P-40E '65-000' was lost on this date on the Koolau Range killing the Pilot 1st Lt Kenneth Wayne Sprankle # 0-022823 of Lafayette, Indiana

See:

And I wondered if this was a mis-ident

I contacted David Aiken he said

"The added caption info on Sprankle was actually written by the FLIGHT JOURNAL editor....and IIRC the FlyPast material came via the Pacific Aviation Museum, Hawaii.

The accident report says "twenty four January nineteen forty-two, about fourteen twenty at Koolau range Oahu TH, Kenneth W Sprankle First Lieutenant Regular Army in P Forty, one dash three two nine seven, engine seventeen ten thirty three number forty one dash three five four eight Wheeler Field Oahu TH, apparently failed to recover from inverted spin aircraft completely wrecked, pilot fatal, weather scattered, parachute not used, no failure of material or equipomenrt involved, signed Tinker"
