Walruses again - Battle of Britain
Hi guys
While the water is still running hot, can anyone throw any light on the following Battle of Britain casualties? Walrus attacked and shot down on 7 October1940, believe off south coast. Fate of crew unknown. Who was the attacker? Another Walrus was attacked, on 27 October, by a Do17 - pilot wounded. Any idea which Dornier unit/crew involved? Cheers Brian |
Re: Walruses again - Battle of Britain
Hi Brian,
I think that Olt.Siegried Bethke from the 2/JG2 attacked Walrus from 765 FAA flown by Lt.M.C.Hoskins over La Manche and claimed it shot down. Regards Robert |

Re: Walruses again - Battle of Britain
Hi Brian and Robert
Bethke's claim on 7 October 1940 was for a Blenheim (his 8th). Was this misidentification of the Walrus? Cheers Gordon |
Re: Walruses again - Battle of Britain
Hi,
he claimed not Blenheim but Botha so I think it was misidentification of Walrus. Regards Robert |
Re: Walruses again - Battle of Britain
Hi guys
Most interesting. Does anyone know the serial numbers of the two Walruses in question? Cheers Brian |

Hi Robert
Thanks for the clarification. Much appreciated. Cheers Gordon |
Re: Walruses again - Battle of Britain
On 27 Oct 40 could the Walrus have been attacked by a Bf 110? Many Allied pilots confused the Do17 with the Bf110 during the 1939-1940 period.

Hi James
You could be correct although I haven't found a suitable Bf110 claim as yet. Cheers Brian |
