Plt Off John Gillespie Magee
I have yet again read another book which quotes the poem 'High Flight' and yet again gets it wrong about the death of its writer, John Magee. If anyone is thinking of writing about Magee and his demise, this is the correct story (unless someone knows differently!):
J5823 Plt Off John Gillespie Magee, 412 Sqn. Spitfire AD291. Collided with Oxford T1052 of RAF College SFTS flown by 1314735 LAC (U/T P) Ernest Aubrey Griffin. Crashed at Ruskington, 1130 hrs, 11 Dec 41. Magee is buried at Scopwick, Griffin at Headington, Oxford |
